Exploring Bluetooth and WiFi6 with These Two Development Boards

KeywordsBluetooth, WiFi6, Development Board Review

AbstractNordic is a representative IoT connectivity chip provider from Norway, leading the global BLE market. This article provides a detailed introduction to the performance, resources, and acquisition channels of Nordic’s nRF5340 Audio Bluetooth development board and nRF7002 WiFi development board.

Currently, the commonly used wireless communication technologies can be roughly divided into: short-range wireless communication and long-range wireless communication based on transmission distance. Short-range wireless communication includes WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, NFC, UWB, etc. Long-range wireless communication includes LoRa, NB-IoT, etc.

In recent years, Bluetooth and WiFi have become the two most commonly used wireless connections in daily development. Nordic is a representative IoT connectivity chip provider from Norway, leading the global BLE market. At the same time, WiFi has developed to the 6th generation, incorporating energy-saving technology that sacrifices some throughput for longer battery life. Nordic acquired the entire WiFi R&D team and IP from Imagination. Soon after, Nordic launched the nRF7002 WiFi6 chip, designed specifically for IoT applications, making it an ideal choice for adding Wi-Fi 6 functionality to existing low-power Bluetooth/Thread/Zigbee systems.

Today, we present Nordic’s nRF5340 Audio Bluetooth development board and nRF7002 WiFi development board. In this issue, we will learn about these two star products.

nRF5340 Audio Bluetooth Development Board

nRF5340 Audio is the world’s first wireless connectivity SoC with two Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors. The M33 core achieves the best balance between performance, power consumption, security, and productivity. In the current microcontroller market, dual-core products are rare, indicating that its performance is exceptionally strong in certain aspects. Moreover, the nRF5340 features a dual-core M33, which excels in several areas.

nRF7002 WiFi Development Board

The nRF7002 WiFi development board is Nordic’s first WiFi product launched in 2022. The nRF7002 supports dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5GHz, which is relatively rare in IoT applications, giving the nRF7002 an advantage. Dual-band flexibility allows for more versatile applications. The nRF7002’s maximum output power is 21 dBm, and in sleep mode, the current is only 15uA. In working mode, for instance, at 2.4 GHz, 1MBPS, DSSS maximum power output, the current is only 252mA. Compared to other products, nRF7002 has relatively low power consumption. Lower power consumption extends battery life and longevity for IoT applications. In terms of ecosystem, the nRF7002 needs to be used with other system-level chips from Nordic, such as the nRF5340 mentioned above, although it can also connect with non-Nordic chips.
