Explore the ADALM-PLUTO SDR with Digi-Key: Funpack Edition 5

Funpack is a year-long “Play to Win” event initiated by Hard禾 Academy in collaboration with Digi-Key. Each month, we will introduce a top-tier semiconductor manufacturer’s development board/instrument kit. If you can play with it according to the specified goals within a month, you can receive substantial rewards.

Finally, the troublesome year of 2020 is over. In 2021, the fifth edition of Funpack kicks off with the powerful ADI ADALM-PLUTO SDR as our handheld RF lab!

With the new year comes new opportunities. We hope to allow more friends to discuss and explore technology while also gaining a bundle of joy (this is also the origin of the name “Funpack Together”). This new edition adopts an online submission method, which we hope will encourage everyone to share their technology and fun, allowing more friends to benefit and enjoy.
To ensure everyone can use PLUTO smoothly, we have invited Xiao Yuan, who is very familiar with PLUTO and one of the senior instructors at the Hard禾 Practical Camp, along with his SDR friend Teraytech to be the leading instructors. They will introduce the various aspects of PLUTO in detail and guide everyone to get started quickly and effectively.
Now, let’s first hear from Teacher Su about PLUTO, understand the rules, and then meet our two leading instructors, Xiao Yuan and Teraytech, and their introduction to PLUTO.The event group chat has also been prepared for everyone, and the joining method can be found at the end of the article.

What is Software Defined Radio?

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a wireless broadcasting communication technology that is based on software-defined wireless communication protocols rather than hardwired implementations. The frequency band, air interface protocols, and functionalities can be upgraded through software downloads and updates without needing to completely replace hardware.
Previously, when developing radio communication equipment, engineers had to first develop receivers to receive and process specific signals to decode or encode specific signal transmissions. With the increasing complexity of digital signal processing and its algorithms, these signal processing platforms have also become increasingly complex, often requiring high-speed ADCs, FPGAs, and connection chips that can stream real-time data to computer platforms. Each system’s corresponding hardware platform is not necessarily the same, leading to significant development costs. By using SDR devices for analog signal processing, various different software programs can run simultaneously on the same hardware platform, which not only saves development costs but also improves the efficiency of developing new systems.

What is ADALM-PLUTO?

ADALM-PLUTO is a portable software-defined radio learning module developed by ADI based on its RF transceiver chip AD9363. This module can be used in classrooms to introduce students to the basics of software-defined radio (SDR), radio frequency (RF), and communication, and can also serve as a learning and development tool for students, engineers, or enthusiasts to get hands-on experience with software-defined radio. It combines theory with practical application; when connected to a host, it can serve as a portable laboratory, allowing you to start your wireless communication learning journey anytime. With the support of software like MATLAB, Simulink, and GNU Radio, you can use a user graphical interface (GUI) for your designs, making the learning and development process more intuitive and convenient, helping users learn, work, and explore efficiently.

It is compact and can easily fit into a pocket or backpack, providing flexible use powered by a USB port with default firmware. The module supports OS XTM, WindowsTM, and LinuxTM, allowing users to learn and explore RF systems on different devices at different times.

Thus, ADALM-PLUTO is suitable for everyone.

As for the hardware structure, as shown in the figure above. Its core is a Xilinx Zynq-7000 XC7Z010 FPGA. The Zynq-7000 device is equipped with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor that integrates programmable logic based on 28nm Artix-7 or Kintex®-7, providing excellent performance per watt and maximum design flexibility. The Zynq-7000 device has up to 6.6 million logic cells and offers transceivers ranging from 6.25Gb/s to 12.5Gb/s, providing highly differentiated designs for various embedded applications (including multi-camera driver assistance systems and 4K2K ultra HD televisions).

In terms of RF, ADALM-PLUTO is based on AD9363 and is equipped with one receiving channel and one transmitting channel that can operate in full-duplex mode. The module is capable of generating and measuring RF analog signals within a frequency range of 325MHz to 3800MHz at a sampling rate of up to 61.44MSPS and a bandwidth of 20MHz.

The power device in ADALM-PLUTO provides power to the FPGA, RF front-end, DDR, and FLASH.

In high-speed signal processing systems, caching high-speed, large amounts of data is essential, and the choice and application of memory have become crucial to system implementation. Micron DDR3L is a high-speed CMOS dynamic random-access memory that uses a double data rate structure to achieve high-speed operations. SDR SDRAM can only transmit one data bit width per clock cycle, so under the same data bus width and operating frequency, the bus bandwidth of DDR SDRAM is twice that of SDR SDRAM.

QSPI Flash is a type of electrically erasable programmable ROM memory that retains its content when powered off. It can be divided into two main categories based on the interface: parallel Flash and serial Flash. Parallel Flash has a large storage capacity and fast speed, while serial Flash has a relatively smaller storage capacity but is compact, simple to connect, reducing circuit area and saving costs. QSPI Flash is serial Flash with an embedded SPI bus interface, which saves many I/O resources compared to traditional parallel bus interface Flash.

ADALM-PLUTO has a significant advantage over other software-defined radio platforms on the market due to its high-quality software ecosystem. Its design documentation is completely open-source, and very detailed, with an active developer community for extensive discussion and exchange among developers and learners. Its hardware platform achieves low-cost performance and quality, which is something other expensive software-defined radio development platforms cannot accomplish.

In summary, ADALM-PLUTO is a high-performance, compact, easy-to-use software-defined radio platform, making it ideal for both beginners and professional engineers in software-defined radio, helping more people learn, work, and explore more efficiently.
